Welcome to my portfolio!

I'm a rising junior at William & Mary, earning my Bachelor of Science in Integrative Conservation with a minor in Data Science. I am passionate about bridging the gap between science and society and hope to do so by communicating complex scientific ideas through data visualization, illustration, and journalism.

In my academic pursuits, I've explored the intersection of climate change and data science, honing my skills in various tools and technologies. As an Environmental Science/GIS intern with Noblis and through my data science coursework, I've worked with ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, Python, and R (particularly tmaps and ggplot), HTML, and web scraping, leveraging these tools to analyze and visualize data effectively.

My commitment to effective communication extends beyond technical proficiency. Through my diverse work experiences and coursework, I've developed skills in copyediting and nonfiction writing, with a particular focus on electronic literature. Whether it's refining manuscripts for publication or crafting compelling narratives, I'm dedicated to delivering engaging content that resonates with audiences.

Map Challenge: Hexagons

This map was created in Spring 2024 for my Geovisualization & Cartography course. I was given a map challenge to create a map using only colored hexagons. I had full freedom to choose data from the Global Airport Database, which provided a CSV file of all airports in the world.

Map Challenge: Monochromatic

This map was created in Spring 2024 for my Geovisualization & Cartography course. I was challenged to create a map using any data in a monochromatic color palette. This map is entirely purple, including a gray and white-like purple. I chose to represent the railroads of my home state, Virginia, and North Carolina. To give more context to the railways I added population data from the census.

Campus Map

This map was created in Spring 2024 for my Geovisualization & Cartography course. For this project, I was instructed to make a map of some part of my college campus and include a relevant QR code, the school's logo, and traditional map elements.

Map Challenge: Map Series

This map was created in Spring 2024 for my Geovisualization & Cartography course. I was given a large dataset from the US Agricultural Census and the US Census. I used different geoprocessing tools to calculate the density of farms, the mean center, create a Getis-Ord GI* Hot-Spot Analysis, and find the average age of farmers per county. Non-continental states were omitted to avoid compromising the mean center map.

Briefing Simulation

This map was created in Spring 2024 for my Geovisualization & Cartography course. For this project, I received a briefing from my 'employer' detailing the criteria for a habitat suitability model for growing cannabis. I was instructed to develop my own briefing in any layout I wanted to, as long as I included the statistics and locations of patches that meet the criteria.

Note: While the data utilized to construct this habitat suitability model is authentic, it is important to highlight that the criteria employed are not suitable for accurately assessing the cultivation potential of cannabis.

Research Project: Identifying Parcels

This map was created in Spring 2024 for a semester-long research project with the Institute for Integrative Conservation at William & Mary. In partnership with a local non-profit, my research partner and I developed a habitat suitability model based on the state's new ConserveVirginia v3.0 plan. In addition to using other data from Virginia's Department of Conservation and Recreation, we identified the parcels within the partner organization's service area that were optimal for conservation easements. This simple layout was created to accompany our raw data files and data dictionary, allowing the partner organization to get a quick understanding of the data.

Exports/Imports in Central America

This dynamic data visualization was created in Fall 2023 for my Data Visualization for Social Science course, using ggplot in R. I was given a very large dataset from VDEM and had full creative freedom to create a visualization. I wanted to challenge myself and include more variables than I had in past assignments.

Tuberculosis Map with Tooltips

This data visualization was created in Fall 2023 for my Data Visualization for Social Science course, using tmaps in R. Using Esri's integration with R, I created a map without ArcGIS Pro. The map also included tooltips with some relevant information.

AIDS Simulator

This project was created for my Electronic Literature course in Spring 2024. I made this HTML file using Twine, an open-source used for creating interactive and hypertext stories. As a student interested in nonfiction communication, I decided to take the user through different timelines of four people discovering they are HIV positive. Included in these stories are timeline-appropriate newspaper clippings, videos, and other photographs. The final product is meant to be experienced on full screen in an independent tab.

Geospatial Research Poster

This research poster was created for my Digital Environmental Humanities course in Spring 2024. I performed a critical analysis of the geospatial analysis tool 'Google Earth Engine,' using a web scraping tool to determine the countries in which each dataset available in the catalog was produced. This allowed me to consider the role of knowledge production in the geoprocessing tools I use.
